If you have hours to spare to scour the internet yourself then it is possible that you will find a marginally better deal, but we also believe that in the majority of cases you will fail to do so.

LateRooms.com has an excellent range of UK hotels and, in our opinion, one of the easiest to use and helpful hotel-booking search engines in the business. As their name suggests, they are particularly good for booking UK hotels at short notice, just a few weeks ahead, when you can frequently snap up a real bargain. However, their market leading presentation of hotels matching your search criteria also allows you to see easily whether booking a day earlier or later will actually allow you to save even more money on their terrific rates. They specialise not only in UK Hotels, but also Hotels around the World.
Hotels.com is another favourite of ours. They have an excellent selection of hotels across the UK, and again have market-leading prices. As well as UK Hotels, they also have thousands of Hotels Worldwide.
Travelodge.co.uk is another company we regular feature on this blog, although they are obviously a hotel chain which just features their own Travel Lodges. If you are looking for standard 3* accommodation at a great price then you really will struggle to match those from Travelodge when they are running one of their £9, £19 or £29 room promotions (which to be honest, is nearly all of the time nowadays!). These low room rates are non-cancellable and non-refundable, so only useful if you know you won’t have to change your plans, and do usually have to be booked 18 days in advance (£19 rooms) or 7 days in advance (£29 rooms). If you have to book with less than 7 days notice or need more flexibility, then we do recommend you check the prices of other hotels too using the other sites listed here.

The regeneration of Manchester’s city centre has led to a wealth of truly luxurious apartments being built, and there are thousands available as an alternative to hotels for anything from just one night to a week, or more if you want it.
A quick look on LateRooms list of Manchester Accommodation brings up a list of hotels and apartments where, unusually, there are almost as many apartment establishments as there are hotels.
As you read down the list of places to stay, there are a couple of things that immediately jump out at you:
- The 4* serviced apartments are significantly cheaper than the 4* hotels
- The 4* serviced apartments almost all have a customer review rating of 5 out of 6, which is far less common for the hotels
Apartment Complexes with on-site management start at around £72 for a studio (try the Atrium by Bridge Street Apartments) or £77 for a 1 bedroom apartment (like the 4* Premier Apartments). However, you can also book luxury 4* and 5* apartments for even less than this done mind choosing one where you have to phone in advance of your arrival so someone can meet you there.
For example, the 4* City Penthouse Apartments offer 1 bed suites for £69, or £65 per night for a minimum of 2 nights stay.

You’ll have probably realised by now that I like Travelodge, due to their unbelievable prices, but even I had to do a double-take when I spotted this news item on their site:

Apparently there are many of us who feel lost and lonely when we are sleeping away from home without our partners, and the ‘Cuddillow’ is there to comfort us.
I have included the full text below for your amusement or delight, depending on how much you miss your own partner when sleeping away.
In response to customers who find it difficult to sleep on their own when travelling solo, Travelodge has created “Cuddillow” the UK’s first cuddling pillow.
A survey of 2000 solitary travellers by the UK hotel chain identified 57% of respondents felt lonely, sleeping without their partner when away from home. Sixteen per cent found it difficult to fall asleep and nine per cent of respondents felt scared sleeping on their own.
To help lone guests attain a good night sleep, Travelodge has created the “Cuddillow” a bespoke cuddling pillow which is two and half feet in length and has two arms for guests to snuggle into. The “Cuddillow” will be trialled in hotels in Newcastle, Durham, Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham. It will be free of charge for guests to hire.
Wayne Munnelly, Travelodge Sleep Director said: “Our research identified staying away on your own can be lonely, stressful and it plays havoc with your sleep routine. In response to our findings we have developed the “Cuddillow” – It’s a substitute hug to help you to get a good night sleep“.
