Budget Hotels – Travelodge, Premier Inn, Days Inn – Which is the Best?
We have recommended several different Budget Hotel Chains over recent months, as well as Special Offers at more expensive hotels. The purpose of this article is to summarise what we see as the benefits of each of Travelodge, Premier Inn and Days Inn.
Number and Location of Hotels
Premier Inn is an impressive winner if you are looking purely at the number of hotels, with over 500 across the UK. Travelodge comes a respectable second, with about 350, so both Premier Inn and Travelodge have an extensive choice in town and airport locations. Days Inn Hotels are much fewer in number, between 20 and 30, although some are conveniently positioned in Welcome Break service stations if you need to break up a journey on the motorway.
Quality of Accommodation
Premier Inn and Travelodge are both generally rated 3 star, and Days Inn 2 Star. However, don’t let the 2 Stars fool you, as on Booking.com the Warwick M40 Days Inn which I stayed at recently had an 8 out of 10 rating from 118 customers. The Days Inn room was clean and comfortable, and personally I would rank it as almost equal to the Travelodge – and with some extras like biscuits, tissues and shower gel/shampoo which Travelodge don’t provide in order to save money. I would certainly place Premier Inn in top slot here.
Quality of Food
As cooked food is available at every Premier Inn, with restaurants being one of Beefeater, Brewers Fayre, Table Table, Taybarns, or the Hotel’s own, they have to be awarded first place for food. The buffet breakfast is also more extensive than Travelodge and the only Days Inn I have stayed at was at a motorway service station which meant the food wouldn’t win any awards. I would place Travelodge joint second with Days Inn, as those with a Bar Cafe offer you as as much as you can eat for the cooked buffet breakfast, but those without can mean you have little choice for breakfast unless it is one of those next to a Little Chef. All three chains have ‘Kids Eat Free’ offers.
Price
If Price is the most important factor then Travelodge wins ‘hands down’. Their frequent sales, and the sheer volume of rooms they sell at £19 and £29 is amazing, and has really opened up the market to those on a lower budget. Days Inn comes in second, as you can purchase rooms at some of their hotels for just £29.95 or £35. Premier Inn trails the pack in this case, as their cheapest rooms are £49. All three chains have family rooms at this price.
Conclusion
- If money is not a significant factor, then Premier Inn is the clear winner.
- If you can take advantage of the non-refundable ‘saver rooms’, and you know you won’t have to cancel and lose your money, then Travelodge offers great value accommodation at a fantastic price, and is highly recommended.
- If you need to break up your journey, and want clean and comfortable rooms near the motorway at a competitive price, then Days Inn can also be a great deal (but book through booking.com to get the best price).

Holiday Inn Stratford Upon Avon from £70 per Room Flexible Rate
The Holiday Inn Stratford Upon Avon certainly struck me as a more luxurious choice than the Travelodges I usually stay at. The Travelodges have their place, and I recommend them when you just need a clean and comfortable room for the night and have the option of the amazing price of a Travelodge Saver Room.
However, for my visit to the marvellous town of Stratford Upon Avon I was after a little more luxury, hence my choosing the Holiday Inn. Looking ahead to August, Flexible Room Rates start at £70 per room, and there are Dinner, Bed and Breakfast packages for two available at a room price of just £94 if you choose the advance purchase non-refundable option.
There are plenty of little touches to make sure you know you are in a 4 star hotel.
I am always pleased to see biscuits on the tea tray. And going into the bathroom I was reassured to see there are flannels there too. It’s a small thing, I know, but I do like to have a flannel supplied in the bathroom. Of course, there is also the usual selection of toiletries, and the chrome fittings add a touch of class.
Apart from the terrestrial channels, there is also Sky One and Sky Sports on offer, although I don’t recommend anyone use the telephone where the starting prices are 55p per minute for a local call!
The Holiday Inn Stratford also boasts an indoor pool, sauna and whirlpool, if you want some relaxation before heading for the theatre.
The Holiday Inn is close to centre of Stratford Upon Avon, which means it is ideally located for a weekend or mid-week theatre break.

Days Inn Hotel Family Rooms from £29.95 Through Booking.com
I have just completed a stay at the Days Inn Hotel at the Welcome Break Services on the M40 Northbound, and bearing in mind I paid just £29.95 through Booking.com I was really impressed.
This isn’t a time-limited ‘special offer hotel room‘, it is the standard price which you pay when you book this Days Inn hotel through Booking.com.
The Welcome Break Days Inn on the M40 Northbound has just been refurbished, scoring a customer rating of 8/10, and I would now rate it of a similar standard to a Travelodge. This means you now have two choices for cut-price accommodation and clean and functional hotels.
Although Travelodge.co.uk can offer cheaper rooms (for example, the £19 Travelodge Summer Sale Rooms currently on offer), if you need to spend closer to £30 then Days Inn are also worth considering. Although the Travelodge Hotel Rooms at this price cannot be cancelled, when you book a Days Inn Room through Booking.com you can cancel without charge provided you give at least 1 days notice.
Days Inn Hotels also have the minor additional touches of biscuits on your tea tray and shower creme/shampoo and tissues in the bathroom, and a soft chair at the desk, but overall I would put Days Inn and Travelodge on a par with eachother.
Although Days Inn does not have the same coverage as Travelodge, if you are travelling on the motorway network and need an overnight stop then I do recommend them as they offer such great value. However, make sure you book through Booking.com to get the best price, as the rack rate advertised outside the hotel itself was £55.

Budget Hotels – Cheap Prices No Longer Mean Shoddy Rooms and Poor Service
The Budget Hotel market is changing rapidly. Gone are the days when Cheap Rooms meant Low Standards and Poor Service. And this is thanks in no small part to the aggressive but customer-winning marketing of £19 rooms by Travelodge.
www.Travelodge.co.uk have thrown down the gauntlet to their rivals with their year round £29 Travel Lodge Rooms, along with their regular sales of £19 Rooms sleeping up to 4 people. These prices are only available if you are happy to pay for non-refundable rooms, but never the less this has opened up travel opportunities to many more would-be travellers and business people.
No other Budget Hotel Chain comes close to competing with Travelodge.co.uk when it comes down to the pure value for money of these £19 and £29 Travel Lodge rooms. They are rated 3 star, their rooms are clean and comfortable, and their staff incredibly helpful and friendly.
However, if you need flexibility you should certainly cast your net wider, and search using the hotel booking sites recommended on our Best Hotel Websites page. When you look at the full price of £50-£60 for a Travelodge, you may be able to find higher standard accommodation at a cheaper price – if it can be found anywhere then our recommended Hotel Booking Websites are the place where you will find it.
In addition, we recommend you check the Holiday Inn Express and Holiday Inn website, as the price for both chains can start as low as £40 per room. On top of that, at the Holiday Inn Express this includes free continental breakfast and free internet access. Personally, I would rate both these chains as upmarket to Travelodge, so when you can find a room here for a lower price it is worth taking.
