A Brief History of Premier Inn
Premier Inn has worked hard to establish its brand, and to set itself apart from cheaper imitations. During its journey it has steadily established itself as the highest quality of the budget hotel chains.
Hopefully the following will help guests learn a little more of its history, and to be clear where Premier Inn fits amongst the other commonly-used and sometimes confusingly-used hotel chain names.
Up until 2004, Travel Inn was a well-known and respected chain which was owned by the Whitbread group.
In July 2004, Whitbread acquired the Premier Lodge chain, and then set about integrating the 141 Premier Lodges with its Travel Inn chain. It’s new name became Premier Travel Inn.
In June 2007, Whitbread announced its intention to re-brand its budget hotel chain from Premier Travel Inn to simply Premier Inn, supported by its largest ever advertising campaign featuring Lenny Henry. Since doing so, they have managed to distance themselves from their sometimes cheaper rival Travelodge and position themselves as the budget hotel chain of choice for families (see Premier Inn Voted Best Family Travel Facilities in 2007 and 2008)
September 2007 saw Premier Inn acquire another 6 hotels previously trading under the Tulip Inn and Golden Tulip brands, with a pipeline of another 9 sites secured.
As of today, Premier Inn continues to go from strength to strength with its catchphrase “Everything’s Premier but the Price!“, and everyone associates Lenny Henry with the purple logo of Premier Inn.
