Bread. I especially like χωριάτικο (village) style bread with sesame seed. A loaf of bread will set you back between 0,60 - 1,20 euro, depending. Greek salad (χωριάτικη σαλάτα) is fresh, tasty, cheap, and Greek! Tomato, cucumber, onion, green pepper, olive oil, oregano. The vegetable ingredients will cost you probably 2 euros to make a salad large enough for several people. A liter bottle of olive oil is generally around 5 euro, but it will last you for a number of days, so it ends up being pretty cheap in the end. Carbonara pasta (without the meat): Basically whatever type of pasta you like, plus cream, cheese, throw in some mushrooms or other veggies if you wish in order to make up for the lack of meat (usually you use bacon). A bag of pasta will cost 0,60 - 1,20. You'd probably need a couple small boxes of cream to make a meal for several people, so I'd count on about 1,50 to 2,00 euro for that. The veggies will cost probably 0,50 to 1,00 depending what you put in and how much. You can also whip this up, put it in a pan and cook it in the oven, then voila, you have soufle ;-) You can also make up some french fries. Potatoes sell for between 0,60 euro to 1,30 per kilo. Fry them in olive oil (since you'll already have olive oil for the Greek salad, plus it tastes better fried in olive oil). All these dishes are extremely easy to make and quite cheap. The prices I quoted are for here in Athens; I'm not sure about prices in Zakynthos. Last summer I survived on bread and Greek salad. I lived off less than 1 euro/ day for food each day. Of course, I don't recommend living like that - you have to be very hardy and very very poor! You might get better suggestions by posting this question in a cooking section of Y!A. Most things that you can find in your country are available here in Greece, especially the common staples. |
